Eyelash Extensions FAQ's
What are lash extensions made of?
There are three types of lash extensions: synthetic, silk and mink. These Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent and made up of single strands that can be curved to replicate a natural eyelash. They provide length and thickness to your own lashes and are available in varying colors, lengths and thickness.
Are eyelashes glued to the skin?
No! No! NO. A single natural eyelash is isolated and a synthetic lash is glued to the top of your own natural eyelash approximately 1mm from the eyelid so neither the glue or the lash has contact with the skin. Eyelashes are applied (glued) to your individual eyelashes, one lash at a time.
Is the glue safe?
Since your eyes are shut the whole time the lash extensions are being applied, no glue will ever get into your eye. To avoid any irritation, however, the first safety precaution we take is to be sure that the glue we use is safe for your eyes and doesn't contain anything that can harm you, like formaldehyde. Many eyelash salons in the Redondo Beach area use glue with formaldehyde why? It’s cheaper but is a common cause of irritation!
How long does it take to apply lash extensions?
Applying a full set of lashes may take up to two hours, and can be maintained year-round with refills recommended every two to three weeks.
How long do the eyelash extensions last?
Approximately 2-4 weeks if you respect your new lashes and take care of them. Remember this is a semi-permanent beauty procedure. Your eyelashes are hair and like the rest of the hair on your body old eyelashes will eventually fall out and new ones will grow back and take their place. Your natural lash cycle as well as how you take care of your lashes will affect how long they last. Also your life style and what work you do will also make a difference how long they last. A woman with eyelash extensions working in the food industry where there is a lot of heat, steam and oil may not last as well as a woman who works in an air conditioned office. In order to maintain a full lash look you must come in every two or three weeks for a refill appointment.
What are refills, why do I need them and how often do I need them?
Refills are when the natural eyelash has fallen out (due to for example the eyelash cycle) and there has been an extension lash applied to it. You can get a Refill instead of a new set of lashes when at least 50% percent of your lash extensions are still attached your natural lash. If there is less than 50% of lashes extensions attached to your natural lashes a full set of lash extensions will need to be purchased. You will require Refills every 2-4 weeks if you would like to achieve a consistently full fresh set of lashes.
Some salons advertise that their eyelash extensions can last for two months some even say they are permanent. The semi-permanent eyelash will shed with the cycle of your natural lashes. Do not be fooled by those who claim that they provide “permanent” extensions or attachments that last for 2+ months. A real lash’s life cycle is around 25-28 days so as your natural lash grows and falls out, so will the synthetic ones that are attached to it. Eyelash extensions will not last for two months nor can be permanent, it’s NOT possible! Beware! This is false advertising by salons and inexperienced people.
Do the eyelashes come in different lengths and thickness?
Yes, we are eyelash extension specialists and we have received advanced training on how to apply various types, sizes and kinds of eyelashes. So we carry a large range of lashes. Lengths available are from 6mm to 16mm. We use “C”, “D”, “L” and “J” curl lashes just to name a few. Specialty lashes are now very popular like the “Y” and “V” lashes which create a double the amount of lashes giving the look of greater thickness and volume. During your eyelash application procedure a mixture of lengths and thicknesses well be used - shorter lashes being used on the inner eye area and gradually increasing in length towards the middle and outer corners. Unlike other eyelash extension operators who only stock three lengths, we understand that not one size fits all so we apply what our clients request and we tailor make to suit each individual client. If you have a specific request or look please discuss this with our Redondo Beach or Manhattan Beach eyelash extension specialists on the day of your appointment.
What should I do before my eyelash extension appointment?
Make sure you thoroughly clean your eyelashes before your eyelash extension appointment. The glue used to stick an eyelash extension to your natural lash will only work if your eyelash is clean and free of oil and makeup. There may be an additional cost if we have to clean your eyelashes. There will be an additional cost to remove lashes from $40 and up. Please arrive with no mascara and do not perm or curl your eyelashes before your eyelash extension appointment. If you wear contact lenses please bring your contact lens case as your lenses will need to be removed.
Can you shower or swim right away? Are there products you should absolutely avoid?
Keep water away from your lashes for the first 12 to 24 hours after application or refills. Also no saunas for the first 24 hour s after application or refills. Water (steam) can weaken the adhesive before it is set and cause lashes to fall off. Please refrain from taking hot showers. The after-care is also important. For instance, the glue used will break down with oil-based products also makeup removers around the eye area are not recommended. Using water-proof mascara on the extensions is not recommended because of it negative effect on the glue, as it is hard to remove and can actually pull off the lashes prematurely when trying to take it off.
Is there any reason why I can't have eyelash extensions applied - Contra-Indications?
It is suggested that if you are an "eye rubber" due to allergies such as hay fever or if rubbing your eyes is just a habit or in the past you have experienced sensitivity around the eye area after using skin care or makeup or generally having sensitivity around that area the extensions may not suit you. If you use prescribed medicated eye drops or ointment this may coat the lashes and cause them to clump. Eyelash extensions cannot be applied to very curly eyelashes as it will be difficult to glue an extension on. However, if you are unsure please contact the salon to discuss it.
Will your natural lashes get harmed or damaged?
The biggest myth is that lash extensions ruin your own lashes. They do not. If applied correctly and properly, they are safe and do not ruin the health of your natural lashes. Be sure not to rub your eyes or tug or pull on the extensions because this can cause lash loss and even damage to your natural lashes. If lashes are applied properly and to each individual lash, they won’t fall out.
Can the eyelash extensions be removed?
Yes, at any time for any reason they can be removed however there will be a removal charge. The extensions must be removed by a Eyelash extension professional by using a glue remover and is safe and will cause no harm to your natural lashes.
I had my lashes applied somewhere else and they are a disaster with excessive amounts of glue clumping my lashes together. Can I have the lashes removed and not get new eyelash extensions?
Sadly eyelash extensions are being applied by people who have had no training or have not been trained correctly and such ones usually use cheap products. At either of our locations at Redondo Beach or Manhattan Beach we are happy to remove lashes that have been applied elsewhere with or without applying new lashes, however there will be a removal charge.
Can anyone get the WOW eyelash look?
Everyone has different lashes, some have short or thin or very fine lashes some have thick lashes some very sparse lashes. We can only work with what you have. So what can be accomplished is totally dependent on the condition of your own natural lashes. Our lash experts can only work with the length, strength and thickness of your natural eyelashes. For example, if your natural lashes are on the shorter, thinner side, you won't be able to get what some of our Redondo Beach clients sometimes call “ the Kim Kardashian look.
What questions should you ask when searching for a reputable salon or professional?
Because of the sensitive nature of the lashes and the surrounding area, finding someone who is certified to apply the lashes is definitely a must. Professionals use professional products and have been properly trained to apply the lashes without damaging your natural lashes or more importantly, your eyes.
