Hair Removal FAQ's:
Is there a difference between sugaring and waxing?
Yes! Sugaring and waxing are not the same. These two procedures are often put in the same category for hair removal, why? Because they’re somewhat similar in the way they get rid of the unwanted hair, yes both extract (pull) hair out from the root. But as we explain to our Redondo Beach clients these two hair removal procedures are very different from one another when it comes to one aspect extremely important- PAIN!
Why is their less pain with sugaring?
Wax is applied with the direction of hair growth, but removed against the grain of hair growth. Ouch! But with sugaring the sugar paste is removed in the same direction of the hair grows, putting less strain on the skin- always a plus for the pain management department.
Why is sugaring safer than waxing?
Sugar paste is never hot like wax. Wax is applied warm, but sometimes overheated causing a skin burn and then you know what follows- scabs. Sugar paste is used at room temperature so there’s no chance of burning the skin.
Which procedure, waxing or sugaring, is natural and nontoxic?
Unlike wax paste the sugar paste is natural and nontoxic. How and why? The sugar paste is made up of sugar, lemon and water. Wax products are made of resins (toxins) which adhere to skin cells on legs and bodies. Sugaring products never adhere to live skin cells. Therefore, when it is removed, it only gently exfoliates dead skin cells, leaving behind glowing skin.
What is the main advantage of sugaring over waxing?
Certain areas of the body are just more sensitive than others. The highest pain offenders are the upper lip, chest, and pubic hair areas. Sugaring comes in extra handy when ridding hair in these zones.
Why is waxing or sugaring superior to shaving for getting rid of unwanted hair?
One of the main questions we receive from clients in the Redondo Beach and Torrance area is why or how is sugaring or waxing superior over shaving for getting rid of unwanted hair?
What are the main disadvantages of shaving?
When shaving the hair comes back thicker and heaver! Since you are only taking hair even with the skin with shaving, it comes back above the surface very quickly. After shaving you can still feel prickly hair if you touch against the hair growth side.
What are the main advantages of waxing or sugar over shaving?
Waxing or sugaring, however removes the entire hair follicle from the root. Since it removes hair from the root it results in smooth, soft, hair-free skin for weeks. Waxing or sugaring leaves the skin feeling soft even if you touch it against the hair growth side. If you have thick hair growth, opt for sugaring as it will slower the hair growth and also make it fine gradually.
Why do so few salons and spas offer both sugaring and waxing?
“Sugaring” is an advanced procedure for the removal of hair. Mastering the art of removing hair with “sugaring” is very, very difficult. It takes a lot of practice. The learning curve to perform a Brazilian wax or bikini wax with sugaring is up to SIX months or longer BUT ITS WORTH IT!
Do you offer waxing and sugaring at your spa?
Yes! At our Redondo Beach or Manhattan Beach salons we do offer both waxing and sugaring. When we do a Brazilian or bikini with wax we use no sugar. When we do a Brazilian or bikini sugaring we use no wax…just a paste made up sugar, lemon and water!
What are some do’s or don’t before a Brazilian or bikini sugaring or waxing?
1. Hair needs to be at least 1/8 inch long for sugaring (about 2 to 3 weeks growth).
2. For your 1st bikini / Brazilian do trim a bit if you have long hair. Long hairs make the estheticians job a little harder and may give you more discomfort. 3. Do NOT tan 24 hours before or after sugaring.
4. No exercise 24 hours after bikini, brazilin, chest or back.
5. Less time between sugaring means the hairs will be shorter, thinner and sparser because they are not fully matured.
6. For facial sugaring, please let us know if you are using any acne medications. I do not recommend sugaring for clients on Accutane.
7. Taking Advil before sugaring might help reduce pain or inflammation for sugaring or waxing.
8. Most hair will grow back from 10 days to 3 weeks, depending on the individual.
9. If this is your first sugaring, please allow a few days before the big event (Wedding).
How much time should I allow for a sugaring or waxing?
It depends if it is a Brazilian, bikini, brow wax, leg wax etc. A leg wax usually takes the most time up to 45 minutes for the other procedures plan for around a half hour.
